The post-graduation work permit
A post-graduation work permit (PGWP) lets graduates of eligible Canadian programmes work for any employer in Canada. It is often the first step for students who hope to stay permanently.
Who can apply
You must have completed a programme of at least eight months at an eligible DLI, studied full-time, and apply within 180 days of receiving confirmation that you have completed the programme. Your study permit must have been valid at some point during those 180 days.
Language test
For applications made from 1 November 2024, IRCC requires proof of language ability. University graduates need Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 in English or NCLC 7 in French in all four skills. College graduates need CLB or NCLC 5. Tests must come from an approved provider and be less than two years old when you apply.
Field of study
Graduates of bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programmes do not need to meet a field-of-study requirement. Most college graduates do: their programme must be linked to an occupation on IRCC's list of fields in long-term shortage. Check the list before choosing a college programme, since it is updated.
How long the permit lasts
For a programme of eight months to less than two years, the permit usually matches the length of the programme. For a programme of two years or longer, it can be issued for up to three years. Master's graduates from programmes of at least eight months can receive three years.
Not every institution qualifies
Some private colleges, including many public-private partnership colleges, do not lead to a PGWP. Ask the institution in writing before you accept an offer.
Working while you wait
If you apply before your study permit expires and you were allowed to work off campus, you can usually work full-time while IRCC processes your application.
Plan the test early
Book your language test during your final year so the result is ready when you finish. A low score can delay or block the application.
